Screencasts

Screencasts:

Education trends keep making it easier to access information. Today we look at how Screencasts are revolutionizing education. Now students can access classroom information from anywhere on their devices and teachers can keep students aware of lessons when they are away from their classrooms or if they need to remediate at home. The teacher goes home with you!

I created a video to introduce teachers to Epic! so they can use it in their classroom. Screencast-O-Matic offers great features like the ability to choose the size of the area on your screen that will be recorded. You can drag it to any part of the screen you would like to feature. It also allows you to add music and crop the beginning or the end of the video. When you start the recording, however, you will need to install the recorder and the control center was a bit small on my screen. There is a time limit of 15 minutes for recording, but you can easily access the video on a playlist when you log into your account. You will need to upgrade to record longer sessions and in order to edit the video but the overall feel is great.

This is another great source for recording your screen and I used it go give students a quick look at our OPAC. It is powered by Google and you can choose to send your recordings straight to your drive. The recording links are viewed through YouTube as well. The app will appear as an extension on your Google bar and it is more user-friendly than others. You can easily find the button and start recording immediately and share to your Google classroom. It does not have the ability to choose what you record, however, and is limited only to full screen, tab, or both. The control panel bar is extremely easy to navigate because of its large icons AND it lets users write/erase on the screen.

BOTH: These are excellent tools for educators, they are both free and easy to use. They can record your screen and your webcam at the same time so that students can have a view of your screen and you simultaneously. They are easy to share on popular social media platforms.

Here are the videos I created using these screencast tools:

  1. I agree, I one major drawbacks of Screencastify is its inability to only record the part of the screen you are highlighting or talking about. For this I prefer screencast-o-matic but it's a great solution when you're working on a Chromebook.

  2. I actually have a chromebook and Mrs. Goad is right. I was so disappointed because I was told that Screencastify was the perfect technological tool to use with my chromebook. I ended up using Screencast-o-matic and was really pleased how easy this was to use and I know my students and teachers would be able to follow my screencast with ease! Great blog and thorough explanation!

  3. You are filled with such great ideas! Creating a screen cast to provide instruction on EPIC is a fantastic idea. Many of my frequent library fliers have joined my library classroom, but many teachers are not using it. I am going to use this for next year!! Like Born to Read said, great blog and wonderful explanations!!
